Beware the scam at this place on Avenue La Motte-Piquet. There is both
an English and a French menu. They both feature a prix fixe menu of 25
Euros. If you order the prix fixe meal off the English menu, the bill
comes as individual prices, at about 20% more. The restaurant guy
babbles on in French with some incomprehensible explanation. At this
point, after some wine; you just give up; get angry, pay the bill, and
go home and post a message to the Internet. Obviously not the first
time they have pulled this trick.

Whatever happened to honesty and integrity?

Whatever happened to learning enough French to order off the French
menu and understand what is explained to you?

Sigh.....

So just because someone doesn't speak the language, it's open season to rip
them off?

I've taken the care to learn the basics of language in many countries....but
when someone fires unfamilar words at you rapidly, you've got jet lag, and
it's been a long, over stimulated day (even if fun), it can be confusing. We
shouldn't expect that an establishment in the hospitality business should
TRY to be hospitable to customers?

I don't know anything about this restaurant, but I do understand why some
people get totally pissed off and avoid this news group.

Maybe they weren't ripped off. Maybe there was a perfectly honest
explanation of what happened, that the OP did not understand. Hard to
be sure without more information.

The receipt would be helpful, but generally, when people want to
exaggerate stories, they don't provide them. I'd have thought that if
the situation was exactly as described, that it would be illegal?

That said, it's not unusual obviously for menus to be completely
different for the same restaurant depending on the language. We ask for
certain dishes we like in Chinatown here in Manchester which are
generally not on the english menu. I don't think this is
surreptitiousness on the part of the owners- probably just that there
isn't much demand for those items from non-Chinese speakers, so no point
putting it on the menu. If the prices were different however- trading
standards could be involved.

I noticed that dishes with "pferd" in a restaurant in Cologne were not
included on the English menu for that restaurant...

True, true. I was just upset with the flippant response. But how many of us
haven't had the experience of being ripped off travelling? Luckily it's the
exception rather than the rule, but I know I've screwed up the math in my
mind while doing transactions -- strange money, conversion, different
language. That's a lot to juggle when you're confused. I usually just write
it off as a learning experience, but sometimes, when it's really blatant, it
leaves a negative impression.

Then again, I know some of you guys are perfect, so it's probably never
happened to you ;-)

Whe the Italian lire was in the hundreds of thousands to the dollar,
it was easy to get outraged over the usual cheating on every level
that prevails in Italy. On reflection later it seems that it all
worked out to about 25 cents or so. But the histrionics was worth it.

Possibly true, however it doesn't require particular fluency in a
language to be able to read a menu! (Especially one in French, given
that so many upscale restaurants in the U.S. feature French cuisine - or
at least use French names for items on their menus.) Unless you have
severe food allergies, ordering something you don't recognize can often
be a rewarding culinary adventure. (I doubt whether even an Arab
restaurant in Europe would offer such Bedouin delicacies as stewed
sheep's eyeballs - and I might even enjoy THOSE, if I didn't know what
they were, in advance.)

I deplore the subject establishment's apparent attempt to rip off
English-speaking tourists, but it's easy enough to avoid with a
French-English phrase-book (and "Qu'est-ce que c'est?" directed to your
waiter if you are at a total loss about the ingredients of a listed item.)

There isn't anyone like Mixi. He is truly unique. And if one were to hire
Mixi then of course he would be able to translate the McDonalds menus with
alacrity.

Watch out, around here they may ask you for a scan of the restaurant
bill, in order to believe your story.

Don't be silly, dear, this address can't possibly be in a French-speaking country!

You're sure the English menu was prix fixe and not ala carte? (Were the
same items offered on both menus, or is your knowledge of French so
abysmal you couldn't tell?) Did you ask "the restaurant guy" if someone
there spoke English, since you clearly did not speak French? (He was,
after all, speaking the language of the country - not his fault if you
found it "incomprehensible".)

At this
point, after some wine; you just give up; get angry, pay the bill, and
go home and post a message to the Internet. Obviously not the first
time they have pulled this trick.
Why do you assume it was a "trick"? Sounds more like a failure to
communicate, which politeness and a phrasebook might easily have
resolved, were you less arrogant and "typically American".

I suppose I could have railed against the taxi driver who took me to my
hotel from CDG, my first trip to Paris. True, he charged me twice what
I later found was the usual fare, but it was my own fault for simply
agreeing to the price on the placard he displayed, without stopping to
realize that legitimate cabs, everywhere, use meters to measure the fare.

Whatever happened to courtesy and politeness when you are a guest in a

Sometimes restaurants have the same dishes in a Menu or a la carte. If
you add the prices of the dishes of the menu you generally find the menu
much cheaper. But you are not always given the same thing. Some menu
dishes tend to be smaller portions than a la carte ones.

The VAT explanation given by another poster doesn't hold. In France all
restaurant prices must be all inclusive.

But the better explanation is probably that some restaurant owners are
still greedy rascals. So if you want a menu, order a menu, and if the
bill doesn't match what you ordered, just pay exactly what you have
ordered. Eventually call the DGCCRF 3939 « Allô, Service Public » (€ 0.12
per minute) Consumer information service.
